To treat vertebral fractures, bone cement is injected directly into the fractured vertebra, which provides immediate pain relief. But bone cements are too stiff for the brittle bone in an osteoporotic spine and up to 40% of the patients come back with a new fracture. It is like placing a stone into a pile of eggshells.
At Inossia we have invented a softener that can be used with acrylic bone cements to modify their properties in order make them less stiff and more suitable for osteoporotic bone. The softened cement becomes like a sponge instead of a stone in order to reduces the number of new fractures.
